Come Holy Spirit

Updated: May 23, 2021

Pentecost is the day God gave the gift of the Holy Spirit to his apostles. After Jesus’s death and ascension into Heaven the apostles were broken, afraid and lost. They spent nine days in the upper room praying and confused about what had happened (*praying for nine consecutive days is a tradition called a novena). It seemed through worldly eyes that Jesus was defeated since He was mocked, mutilated, and killed. But when he resurrected from the dead, He defeated death and overcame evil. When Jesus said He was going to be with His Father after resurrecting from the dead, the apostles felt confused and abandoned. They didn't believe they could continue their mission without Him. But, the Holy Spirit would come and overshadow them. It would equip them with faith, knowledge, courage to go out and deliver people from bonds of sickness and sin and speak God’s Truth into their hearts to build the Christian Church. The church would be built with Jesus supernaturally and not physically. Mary the Mother of Jesus was with them. She had her own overshadowing of the Holy Spirit where Jesus was conceived in her womb. In Luke 1:36 the angel Gabriel said to Mary. “The holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.

With both of these movements of the Holy Spirit, a bond was created. An agreement where the Holy Spirit, (which is the love between God the Father and His son Jesus) would work through the apostles and Mary.

Why do we need the Holy Spirit?

God’s three acts of Mercy have been His gift of creation, His gift of redemption through Jesus’s death and the gift of sanctification through the Holy Spirit. This act of sanctification makes us set apart from the world and purifies us so that God can live through us, in us and with us. This is the fulfillment of the Our Father Prayer. The prayer that Jesus taught us and his apostles how to pray to God written in Luke 11. When the prayer professes, “Thy Kingdom come on Earth as it is in Heaven.” This is what we were made for! This is not just how we should pray, it's a prophecy telling us that the world will not end, His Kingdom (Heaven) will come on earth! It will come by God living through us, in us and with us!

So today empty yourself of all those things that aren’t Godly. Give all your wounds, hurts, unforgiveness, addictions, etc. over to Jesus. Let them die on the Cross. Then accept His resurrection and rise from a life of sin. Call down the Holy Spirit and let Him equip you just like He did the apostles. So you, too, can be so intimate with God and fulfill the identity He gave you. So you, too can fulfill the Our Father Prayer by letting Him live through you, in you and with you. Do this daily! It’s not a one time prayer. It’s a daily battle. We are living in a world that wants you soul, which will lead to death. We must live in the world, but not of the world. Our bodies are here, but our hearts and our motion must keep moving towards God and towards holiness, towards Heaven. You can’t reach a destination without journeying towards it.

So let us pray, Jesus I surrender all to you!

Come Holy Spirit, reside in me!

Come Holy Spirit, give me direction and move me!

Come Holy Spirit, create a fire in us so that we can go out a set the world on fire with your love!

The Our Father Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come.

Thy will be done

on earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us this day

our daily bread,

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us,

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

*Novena is a prayer that's said consecutively which shows God your surrender, commitment, and faith. The prayer can be a petition or a way to glorify and honor Him.

Praying
Words of
Everyday Grace

Words are powerful!  God literally used words to create the Universe by speaking creation into existence.  In Genesis 1:3 God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. What a beautiful act of love! God uses this communication through the Holy Spirit to "speak" sanctity into us! To transform us from sin to holiness.

Graces are the supernatural gifts God gives us to help us gain eternal salvation.

When we surrender ourselves to God we can be led by these truths and be transformed to  become more like Jesus!
